The future of mobile computing · 8 September 04
A friend of asked me what I would think the future of mobile computing will look like… So here is my vision of a NGC (NextGenerationComputer):
The Basic Computer
I belive in a all in one solution like the current iMac G5 as a the basis for a real new advanced architecture. The mobile device of the future will be avaible in different sizes from sizes like the current iPod up to sizes like the iMac 20 Inch.
The NGC has all the connections to be extended in any needed way and is mainly a CPU/RAM/Display solution. The NGC will allow to be used with a Pen like a Newton and a virtual onscreen Keyboard.
There will be alot of gadgets around the NGC:
- Different stands/mountingKits/Docks (Wall, Table, PictureFrame etc.)
- Wireless Glasses that display a floating picture.
- Wireless Keyboard and Mouse.
- Thimble-Mouse (A tracking device sliped on like a thimble)
- Wireless Headphones
The 3D Desktop
SUN is experimenting with a 3D-Desktop and see the the running proof of concept.
2D/3D-Operating Systems are the future! They will support both worlds, while keeping traditional 2D-Aplications running the will offer new 3D-Applications.
For example if the System would be used with a system like the mentioned 3D-Glasses it would switch in 3D mode and the background area would get transparent showing us the real world. This would make it possible to drive Metro while watching a movie… and we would still be aware of our enviroment!
There comes the next problem syncing the realworld enviroment with the virtual enviroment.
If you have some windows floating infront of yourself and you move your head they should stay at the position you opend them… just like the would be part of the realworld surrounding you. This would make it possible to use 180+ degress of virtual workspace without bending your neck to much.
On the other hand you should be able to pin a application to be allways infront of you nomatter how you move your head.
To finish the thought on Tradition Displays the Background for a 3D enviroment could be virtual. It could be a realtime VR from anywhere on earth or even from mars streamed over the inter/evernet. ;-)
